Zero-Click Search
A search where the user's query is answered directly on the results page (often by AI), resulting in no traffic to external websites.
What is Zero-Click Search?
A zero-click search ends without the user visiting any external website. The need is satisfied on the results page itself, whether by a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, a weather or sports widget, a map pack, or, increasingly, an AI-generated summary. The term predates AI search but has become central to it, because answer engines are designed to resolve questions in place and conversational assistants often never show a results page at all.
Zero-click is not inherently bad for a brand. A user who reads that a product does what they need, sees the brand named as a recommended option, and later searches for it by name has been influenced without a click. What changes is measurement: the brand's presence in that answer does not appear in web analytics, so teams that only watch sessions see decline while the brand may in fact be gaining exposure.
The practical response is twofold. First, measure visibility where it now happens, by tracking mentions, citations and share of voice inside AI answers. Second, make the content that engines summarise work for the brand even without the click: clear brand naming, distinctive positioning, and facts the engine will repeat accurately.
Why it matters for AI search
As more research happens inside AI answers, a growing share of buyer influence occurs without a website visit. Brands that measure only clicks will underestimate both their exposure and their competitors'. Tracking presence inside answers, and shaping content so that the summary itself carries the brand's message, turns zero-click from a loss into a channel. It is also why branded-search and direct-traffic trends have become useful proxies for AI visibility.

Frequently asked questions
Are all AI searches zero-click?+
No. Most answer engines show citations and many users click through, especially for purchase, comparison and how-to intents. But a large share of informational questions are resolved in the answer itself.
How do I measure influence from zero-click AI answers?+
Track brand mentions, position and sentiment in AI answers for a defined prompt set, watch citation counts to owned pages, and monitor branded search and direct traffic as downstream indicators.
