Pillar Page

A comprehensive page covering a broad topic, linking to related cluster content. Core to topical authority.

What is Pillar Page?

A pillar page is the hub of a content cluster. It gives a complete, readable overview of a broad topic, defining it, explaining its parts, and answering the questions a newcomer would ask, and it links out to a cluster page for each sub-topic that deserves deeper treatment. It is comprehensive in scope but not exhaustive in depth; the depth lives in the cluster pages it points to.

A good pillar page opens with a direct definition of the topic, is organised under headings that mirror the sub-topics, gives a substantive summary under each heading before linking to the detailed page, and closes with the questions people commonly ask. It is usually long, but every section is self-contained enough that an engine retrieving a single passage gets a complete thought. Structured data such as Article and FAQPage, and a table of contents, help engines and users navigate it.

Pillar pages tend to become a site's most retrieved pages for a topic because they match the broad, definitional prompts engines receive most often ("what is X", "how does X work", "X explained"). They also concentrate internal links and external references, which strengthens their standing and passes that standing to the cluster pages they link to.

Why it matters for AI search

AI engines receive a large share of broad, definitional questions, and the pillar page is built to answer exactly those. It is the page most likely to be cited when an assistant explains what a topic is, and the links it carries direct the engine to the cluster pages for the follow-ups. For a brand, a well-maintained pillar is also where its framing of the category lives, which is what an engine repeats when it describes the space.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a pillar page be?+

Long enough to give a complete overview of every sub-topic with a substantive summary of each, typically several thousand words, but every section should be tight and self-contained. Depth beyond the overview belongs on the linked cluster pages.

Should a pillar page target a single keyword?+

It should target the topic and the broad questions about it rather than one string. Name the topic plainly in the title and opening, then organise the page by the sub-questions an assistant would be asked, phrased the way buyers phrase them.
