Topical Authority
The perception that your site is an expert on specific topics. AI models prioritize topically authoritative sources.
What is Topical Authority?
Topical authority is the standing a site earns by covering a subject thoroughly, accurately and consistently over time. A site with topical authority on, say, email deliverability does not have one good article about it; it has a connected body of pages that between them answer the beginner questions, the technical questions, the comparison questions and the troubleshooting questions, each linking to the others and each written with evident expertise.
Search engines infer topical authority from the depth and coherence of coverage, from internal linking that shows the pages belong together, from external references that treat the site as a source on the topic, and from user behaviour. AI engines retrieve at the passage level, but their source selection shows a similar preference: when several pages could answer a question, a page from a site that is clearly about that subject tends to be quoted over an isolated post on a general-interest site.
Building topical authority is a content-architecture exercise as much as a writing one. It means mapping the topic's full set of questions, organising them into a pillar page with supporting cluster pages, filling gaps rather than repeating what is already covered, and keeping the whole cluster current. Thin coverage across many topics builds authority in none of them.
Why it matters for AI search
AI engines are asked follow-up after follow-up on the same subject, and they keep returning to sources that answered well last time. A site with deep, connected coverage of a topic becomes the default source for the whole conversation, not just one prompt. Topical authority is also the foundation for being named as a category leader: engines recommend brands they see referenced, consistently and expertly, across the topic's content.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to build topical authority?+
It depends on the breadth of the topic and the competition, but it is measured in months, not weeks. The work compounds: each well-linked, well-answered page strengthens the cluster, and external references accumulate as the coverage earns recognition.
Can a small site have topical authority?+
Yes. Authority is about depth on a defined subject, not overall size. A focused site that fully covers a narrow topic can be treated as more authoritative on it than a large site with a few tangential articles.
