Content Freshness

How recently content was updated. AI often prefers fresh, current information, especially for time-sensitive topics.

What is Content Freshness?

Content freshness describes how current a page is, both in what it says and in the signals that tell engines when it was last changed. Those signals include the visible publication and modification dates, the dateModified property in Article structured data, the lastmod value in the sitemap, and the actual substance of the page: whether it reflects current pricing, current product features, current versions and the current state of the topic.

Freshness matters more for some queries than others. Questions about pricing, versions, comparisons, regulations and anything described as "best" or "latest" are inherently time-sensitive, and engines that retrieve live pages tend to prefer recently updated sources for them. Evergreen explanations of stable concepts are less affected, though even there a page that has clearly not been touched for years signals neglect.

AI engines add a second dimension. A model's training data has a cutoff, so anything that changed after it, such as a rebrand, a new product or a price change, is only known through retrieval. If the retrievable pages are stale too, the engine has no way to correct its outdated impression. Keeping key pages current is therefore how a brand overrides what the model remembers with what is true now.

Why it matters for AI search

AI answers repeat what their sources say, and stale sources produce confidently wrong answers about pricing, features, integrations and leadership. Regularly updating the pages that state a brand's key facts, and signalling the update honestly through dates and structured data, is the most direct way to keep engines describing the brand accurately. It also improves retrieval for time-sensitive prompts, where engines actively prefer recent sources.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing the date on a page make it fresh?+

No. Engines compare the declared date with the actual content and with their own crawl history. Updating dateModified without substantive changes is ignored at best and treated as manipulative at worst. Freshness comes from genuinely current information.

Which pages should be updated most often for AI search?+

Pricing, product and feature pages, comparison and alternatives pages, integration lists, and anything describing the company itself. These are the facts AI engines are most often asked about and most often get wrong when sources go stale.
