AI Traffic
Website traffic originating from AI platform referrals. Can be tracked through analytics to measure AEO effectiveness.
What is AI Traffic?
AI traffic is the set of visits that arrive on a website because a user clicked a link inside an AI answer. In web analytics it appears as referral traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com and claude.ai. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are the exception: clicks from those surfaces are reported as Google organic traffic and cannot be separated cleanly in most analytics tools, though Search Console groups them with regular search.
Setting up AI traffic reporting usually means creating a channel group or segment that matches the known AI referrer domains, then watching sessions, landing pages and conversions for that group. Because the referrer tells you which platform sent the click but not which prompt, AI traffic is most useful when read together with citation tracking, which shows which prompts and pages produced the citations that users then clicked.
AI traffic is small relative to organic search for most sites and understates AI influence. A user who reads an answer, sees a brand recommended and later searches for it by name is counted as branded organic or direct traffic. Landing pages, conversion rate and assisted conversions from AI referrals are therefore more informative than raw session counts.
Why it matters for AI search
AI traffic is the part of AI visibility that shows up in tools marketers already use, so it is the easiest way to demonstrate that citations turn into visits and, ideally, conversions. It also reveals which pages AI users land on and how they behave once they arrive, which informs what those pages should say. But it is only the clicked fraction of a much larger influence, so it should be reported alongside mention, citation and share-of-voice metrics rather than instead of them.

Zero-Click Search
A search where the user's query is answered directly on the results page (often by AI), resulting in no traffic to external websites.
Synthetic Traffic
Web traffic where the primary visitor is an AI agent or crawler acting on behalf of a user.
AI Visibility
The measure of how often and prominently a brand is mentioned, cited, or recommended in AI-generated responses across platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track AI traffic in Google Analytics 4?+
Create a custom channel group or an exploration segment where the session source matches the AI platform domains (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and others you see in referral reports). Review landing pages and conversions for that segment rather than only session counts.
Is AI traffic the same as AI crawler traffic?+
No. AI traffic is human visitors referred by an AI answer and is visible in client-side analytics. Crawler traffic is the automated fetching done by agents such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, which do not run analytics scripts and are only visible in server or CDN logs.
Why is my AI traffic low even though my brand is cited often?+
Most AI answers resolve the question without a click, and users who do act often search for the brand by name afterwards. Treat AI traffic as a lower bound on influence and watch branded search and direct traffic as complementary signals.
