AI Visibility
The measure of how often and prominently a brand is mentioned, cited, or recommended in AI-generated responses across platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
What is AI Visibility?
AI visibility is the umbrella metric for how present a brand is inside AI-generated answers. Where organic visibility in classic SEO is estimated from rankings and impressions, AI visibility is observed directly: a fixed set of prompts is run against each engine on a schedule, and every answer is checked for whether the brand is named, where in the answer it appears, whether an owned page is cited, and how it is described.
The measure is composite. Mention frequency captures how often the brand comes up at all; position captures whether it leads a list or trails it; citation rate captures whether the engine links to the brand's own pages; sentiment captures the framing; and share of voice puts all of that in the context of competitors. A visibility score usually rolls these into one number so that movement can be tracked over time and reported alongside other channel metrics.
AI visibility varies by engine, by topic and by phrasing. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude retrieve from different sources and weight training knowledge differently, so a brand can be highly visible in one and absent from another. Meaningful measurement therefore reports per platform and per topic cluster, repeats prompts to smooth out response variance, and keeps the prompt set stable so changes reflect the engines rather than the questions.
Why it matters for AI search
AI visibility is the top-line number for GEO, the equivalent of organic visibility for a search programme. It tells leadership whether the brand is part of the answers buyers now read instead of clicking through results, and it shows which engines and topics need work. Because it is built from observed answers rather than estimated from rankings, it also gives a direct feedback loop: change a page or earn a placement, re-run the prompt set, and see whether the engines noticed.

Frequently asked questions
How is AI visibility measured?+
By running a defined set of realistic prompts across each AI engine on a recurring schedule, then parsing the answers for brand mentions, position, citations and sentiment. Results are reported per engine and per topic, and repeated runs are averaged to reduce the noise from response variance.
Is AI visibility the same as share of voice?+
No. Share of voice is one component of AI visibility that compares the brand against competitors for the same prompts. AI visibility also includes mention frequency, position, citation rate and sentiment, which describe the brand's presence on its own terms.
Can AI visibility be tracked in Google Analytics?+
Only partly. Analytics shows referral traffic from AI platforms when a user clicks a citation, but most AI answers produce no click. Measuring visibility inside the answers themselves requires prompt-based monitoring rather than web analytics.
