Backlinks
Links from other websites to yours. Important for both SEO and AI authority signals.
What is Backlinks?
A backlink is a hyperlink on one website that points to a page on another. Search engines have treated backlinks as votes of confidence since Google's original PageRank, and links from relevant, reputable sites remain one of the strongest signals of a page's authority in classic search. The value of a link depends on the linking site's own standing, the relevance of the context, the anchor text and whether the link is editorial or paid, with paid and manipulative links explicitly against search engine guidelines.
AI engines do not run a PageRank-style calculation over the links they retrieve, but backlinks influence AI visibility through two routes. First, engines that retrieve from Google or Bing indexes fetch pages that rank well, and rankings depend heavily on links. Second, the pages that link to a brand are usually also the pages that mention it, and mentions across reputable sources are what shape a model's training impression and what retrieval surfaces when an engine looks for third-party views.
For GEO the useful shift is from links to references: being mentioned, described accurately and, where natural, linked on the sources an engine actually cites for the category. A mention on a page Perplexity cites for "best X tools" may matter more than a link from an unrelated high-authority domain. Earning those placements comes from genuinely useful content, original data, expert commentary and community participation, not from buying links.
Why it matters for AI search
Backlinks remain a foundation of the search rankings that feed AI retrieval, and the sites that link to a brand are the sites that tell engines what it is. Analysing which third-party pages engines cite for the category, and earning honest mentions and links there, connects link building directly to AI visibility. Paid or spammy links do not help: they carry no mention value and risk the search standing that retrieval depends on.

Frequently asked questions
Do backlinks affect AI citations?+
Indirectly. Links improve search rankings, and engines tend to retrieve well-ranked pages. More directly, the pages that link to a brand also mention it, and those mentions shape how engines describe the brand. There is no evidence engines count links as a standalone citation signal.
What is an unlinked brand mention?+
A page that names the brand without linking to it. For AI visibility these matter because engines read the mention regardless of the link; for classic SEO they carry no link equity. Converting unlinked mentions into links helps both.
