SERP
Search Engine Results Page. Traditional SEO focuses on SERPs; AEO focuses on AI-generated responses.
What is SERP?
The SERP is the page a search engine returns after a query. For most of the web's history it was a ranked list of links with titles and snippets, and SEO was the practice of earning a higher position on that list. Over time the page filled with other elements: paid ads, featured snippets, knowledge panels, "People also ask" boxes, local map packs, shopping carousels, video results and, since 2024, AI Overviews at the top for many queries.
Those additions matter because they changed what "ranking first" delivers. A page in the first organic position may sit below an ad block, an AI summary and a set of question dropdowns, and a large share of queries end without any click at all. The SERP is now a composite answer surface as much as a list of destinations, and the AI Overview is the part of it that most directly resembles an answer engine.
Answer engines abandon the SERP entirely. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Mode return a composed answer with a few citations, not a ranked list. Classic SERP metrics such as average position and click-through rate have no equivalent there; visibility is instead measured by whether the brand is named, where, with what sentiment, and whether an owned page is cited.
Why it matters for AI search
The SERP is where SEO habits and metrics were formed, and most of them do not transfer to AI answers. Understanding the difference explains why a brand can dominate Google's SERPs and still be absent from ChatGPT, and why GEO needs its own measurement. The SERP still matters: AI Overviews sits on it, AI Mode draws on the same index, and organic rankings remain a strong input to which pages engines retrieve. But it is one surface among several now.

Frequently asked questions
Do SERP rankings affect AI search visibility?+
Indirectly, yes. Engines that retrieve from Google or Bing indexes tend to fetch pages that already rank well, and AI Overviews draws on Google's index directly. But ranking is not sufficient: a top-ranked page that buries its answer or blocks AI crawlers can still go uncited.
Is there a SERP in ChatGPT or Perplexity?+
No. Those engines return a single composed answer with a short list of sources rather than a ranked page of results. There is no position to track; the measurable units are mentions, citations, sentiment and share of voice.
