Citation Rate
The percentage of AI responses that cite your content as a source. A key metric for measuring AEO success.
What is Citation Rate?
Citation rate is calculated by running a defined set of prompts across an AI engine, counting the answers that include a link to a page on the brand's domain, and dividing by the total number of answers. If 200 prompts are run and 30 answers cite an owned page, the citation rate is 15 percent for that engine and period. It is normally broken down by engine, topic cluster and individual page.
The metric isolates the part of AI visibility that comes from the brand's own content. Mention frequency can be high because the engine remembers the brand from training or reads about it on review sites; citation rate is only high if the engine is actually fetching and using the brand's pages. That makes it the best measure of whether on-site GEO work, such as answer-first rewrites, crawler access fixes and structured data, is having an effect.
Citation rate is best read alongside a per-page view. A handful of pages usually earn most citations, and the prompts they win reveal the pattern: pages with a clear question in the title, a plain answer in the first paragraph and specific supporting detail tend to be retrieved repeatedly. Pages that are never cited despite covering relevant topics are candidates for restructuring or consolidation.
Why it matters for AI search
Citation rate is the most direct feedback loop in GEO. Unlike mentions, which depend partly on what the model learned before its training cutoff, citations depend on live retrieval, so a change to a page can move the number within days. It also connects to outcomes: cited pages receive referral traffic, and a rising citation rate on decision-stage prompts means the brand's own framing is reaching buyers rather than a third party's.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good citation rate?+
There is no universal benchmark, because it depends on the prompt set, the engine and the category. The useful comparisons are your own rate over time, your rate on decision-stage prompts versus informational ones, and your rate against the competitor pages cited for the same prompts.
Why is my citation rate zero while my brand is still mentioned?+
The engine knows the brand from training data or third-party pages but is not retrieving your site. The usual causes are retrieval crawlers blocked in robots.txt, content that only appears after JavaScript runs, or pages that do not state a direct answer near the top.
