Google AI Mode
Google's conversational AI interface within search, allowing users to have back-and-forth conversations about search topics.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a tab in Google Search that replaces the results page with a conversational answer. The user asks a question in natural language, receives a synthesised response with links to sources, and can continue with follow-ups that keep the context of the conversation. Google introduced it in Search Labs in early 2025 and then rolled it out broadly, starting in the United States. It supports text, voice and image input and integrates with other Google products for tasks such as shopping and planning.
Under the hood, AI Mode uses a custom version of Gemini together with a technique Google calls query fan-out: the question is broken into multiple sub-queries that are searched in parallel across Google's index and other data sources, and the results are combined into one answer. That means a single AI Mode response can draw on many more pages than a classic results page shows, and it can cite pages that would not have ranked on page one for the original phrasing.
AI Mode is distinct from AI Overviews, which is the AI summary shown above regular results. AI Overviews is a feature on the standard results page; AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational experience. Both draw on Google's index, so eligibility follows the normal Googlebot and snippet rules, and neither is controlled by the Google-Extended robots.txt token, which governs Gemini model training.
Why it matters for AI search
AI Mode is Google's answer engine, sitting inside the search product with the largest audience in the world. Its query fan-out approach means pages that fully answer a specific sub-question can be cited even for broad prompts, which rewards deep, well-structured cluster content. Clicks from AI Mode are reported as Google organic traffic, so its influence is hard to isolate in analytics; prompt-based monitoring is needed to see whether a brand is being named and cited there.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?+
AI Overviews is an AI summary shown at the top of the regular results page for some queries. AI Mode is a separate tab that replaces the results page with a full conversational experience, including follow-up questions. Both use Gemini models and Google's index.
How do I appear in Google AI Mode?+
Be indexed and eligible for normal search, answer specific questions directly on well-structured pages, and cover the sub-questions of your topic thoroughly so the query fan-out can find you. There is no separate opt-in, and blocking Google-Extended does not affect it.
