Reddit Monitoring Tool: Track Brand Mentions, Sentiment and AI Citations
Reddit monitoring is the practice of tracking what people say about your brand, competitors and category across subreddits — and, increasingly, which of those threads AI answer engines quote back to buyers. Asva AI watches the threads, scores the sentiment, and shows you which ones ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are already citing.
What is Reddit monitoring?
Reddit monitoring is the continuous tracking of posts and comments across Reddit that mention a brand, product, competitor or topic, so a team can read sentiment, respond where it is useful, and catch problems before they spread. It differs from general social listening in two ways. First, Reddit conversations are threaded, pseudonymous and long-lived: a two-year-old thread can still be the top result for a product question. Second, Reddit is now one of the most heavily cited sources in AI-generated answers, so a thread is not just a conversation — it is a candidate source for what an assistant will tell the next person who asks about you.
A working Reddit monitoring setup does three things. It collects mentions across every relevant subreddit, including the comments where most discussion actually happens. It classifies each mention for relevance, sentiment, intent and citation likelihood, so the team sees a shortlist rather than a feed. And it routes the right mentions to the right people — a complaint to support, a comparison thread to marketing, a widely cited inaccuracy to comms — while everything else lands in a digest.

Why Reddit monitoring matters now
Reddit is not just another social platform. It is a high-intent discussion forum that search engines index aggressively and AI models cite when they answer buying questions.
AI answer engines lean on Reddit
When a buyer asks an assistant which product to choose, the answer is synthesized from sources the model already trusts. Community threads full of first-hand experience are cited heavily, and both Google and OpenAI have signed content agreements with Reddit. A thread about you is a candidate source for the next answer about you.
Google surfaces Reddit for research queries
For "is it worth it", "X vs Y" and "best X for" searches, Reddit threads routinely sit on page one. Your Reddit footprint is part of your search footprint whether or not you have ever posted there.
Old threads keep working
A tweet is gone in a day. A Reddit thread gets indexed, linked and quoted long after the last comment, so a two-year-old complaint can still be the top result for a product question. Monitoring cannot stop at "new mentions this week".
Nobody will tag you
Redditors rarely @-mention brands. They misspell them, abbreviate them, and discuss them deep inside threads about something else. Native Reddit notifications catch almost none of it, which is why a dedicated Reddit monitoring tool exists.

How Reddit monitoring works: six steps
The sequence that takes a team from searching Reddit by hand to a monitoring system that surfaces the threads worth acting on. Asva AI automates steps two through five; the first and last are decisions only your team can make.
- 1
Define what you are listening for
List brand names and their common misspellings, product names, competitor names, and category phrases such as "best X for" or "X alternative". Add negative-intent terms (refund, cancel, broke, scam) so complaints are caught early, and the question phrasings buyers actually use.
- 2
Map the subreddits that matter
Start with where your category is discussed, not the biggest communities. Include adjacent subreddits — a skincare brand is discussed in r/SkincareAddiction, but also in budget, ingredient and regional communities. A subreddit finder shortens this step considerably.
- 3
Collect comments, not just posts
Most brand discussion on Reddit happens in comment replies, several levels down a thread about something else. Pull posts and comments, deduplicate, and store the thread URL, subreddit, timestamp, score and comment count with every mention.
- 4
Score every mention
Classify each one for relevance (is it actually about you), sentiment, intent (question, complaint, recommendation, comparison) and citation likelihood — whether the thread already ranks on Google or appears in AI answers. Scoring is what turns a firehose into a shortlist.
- 5
Route alerts by rule
A complaint goes to support the same day. A comparison thread goes to product marketing. A widely cited thread that gets a fact wrong goes to comms. Everything else lands in a daily digest so the team reads Reddit once, not all day.
- 6
Baseline, then review weekly
Record mention volume, share of voice against competitors, sentiment mix, and the count of threads showing up in AI answers. Compare month over month and after every launch, campaign or incident so you can tell what actually moved the numbers.
What to track on Reddit
Six signals, in the order most teams add them. Each links to the tool or guide that covers it in depth.
Brand mentions
Every post and comment that names you, including misspellings and nicknames. This is the raw feed everything else is built on, and the first thing to check is how much of it your current process misses.
Check your mentions freeSentiment
Whether a thread praises, complains or shrugs — and how that mix shifts over time. Reddit sentiment is blunter than review-site sentiment, and it is the version AI models read.
Reddit sentiment analysisCompetitor threads
Where competitors are recommended, how often, and in which subreddits. Share of voice on Reddit is one of the few competitive signals you can read directly rather than infer.
Score your Reddit reputationSubreddit discovery
New communities where your category is discussed. Subreddits appear, split and go quiet; the list you built last year is already incomplete.
Find your subredditsKeyword alerts
Category phrases, problem statements and buying questions that do not name any brand yet. These are the threads where a helpful answer earns a recommendation.
Set up keyword alertsAI citations of Reddit threads
Which threads about you ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity are already quoting. This is the layer generic social listening does not have, and it decides which threads are worth your attention first.
AEO for RedditHow Reddit threads become AI answers
This is the part generic social listening pages skip, and it is the reason Reddit monitoring has changed from a nice-to-have into a visibility discipline. AI answer engines reach Reddit two ways. Retrieval-based assistants — Perplexity, ChatGPT with browsing, Google's AI Mode — fetch live pages when a question is asked, and a Reddit thread that ranks for the query is a natural candidate to pull in. Training-based answers absorb Reddit threads when the model is built, which means an inaccurate thread can keep shaping answers long after it stops ranking.
A thread's odds of being cited rise with a few things you can observe: a title that is a direct question or a direct answer, upvoted comments with specific detail (model names, prices, what went wrong), a thread that already sits on page one of Google for the query, and a subreddit the engines have quoted before. None of that requires the thread to be recent. It requires the thread to be useful, which is why old, detailed complaints are cited so often.
The practical consequence for monitoring is that "how many mentions" is the wrong headline metric. The question is which threads about you are being cited, whether they are accurate, and whether a better thread exists to be cited instead. That is a citation problem before it is a Reddit problem, and it is the same discipline we apply across every source in citation intelligence. If the vocabulary is new, the AEO glossary covers it.
What to do about it
- Sort your mention backlog by citation likelihood, not by date, and read the top of that list first.
- Where a cited thread gets a fact wrong, reply once, as the brand, with a source. Do not ask for removal.
- Where no good thread exists for a buying question in your category, answer it honestly in the right subreddit and let the thread earn its place. This is participation work, and it is slow.
- Encourage satisfied customers to share their experience where subreddit rules allow. Recommendations from real accounts are what the engines quote.
- Re-measure on the same prompts after a few weeks. Retrieval engines pick up changes fastest; training-based answers lag.

Reddit monitoring by team
The same feed serves four different jobs. Alert rules are what keep each team seeing only its part.
Brand and marketing
Own the weekly view: mention volume, share of voice, sentiment mix and the recommendation rate against competitors. Use comparison threads and "what should I buy" questions as a live read on positioning, and as a source of language for copy.
Customer support
Treat complaint threads as tickets. A same-day, transparent reply from a verified account is often the difference between a thread that becomes a citation for "terrible support" and one that becomes evidence you fix things.
Product
Reddit is unfiltered feedback at volume. Track feature requests, workarounds people share, and the reasons given when someone switches to or from you. Repeated workarounds are a roadmap signal.
PR and communications
Catch emerging issues before they reach press, and keep a list of the widely cited threads that describe you inaccurately. Those are the ones that shape AI answers and deserve a considered response, not a fast one.

Reddit monitoring metrics that matter
Six numbers, and how to read them. Report them together; any one of them alone is easy to misread.
Mention volume and velocity
How many mentions per week, and how fast that is changing. A spike without a launch or campaign behind it usually means an incident.
Share of voice
Your mentions as a share of all brand mentions in your category subreddits. Track it against two or three named competitors rather than the whole market.
Sentiment mix
The split of positive, neutral and negative mentions, and the net figure over time. Read it by subreddit; a support community and an enthusiast community rarely agree.
Recommendation rate
How often you are the answer when someone asks what to buy. This is the metric most closely tied to revenue and to what AI engines repeat.
Cited-thread count
The number of Reddit threads about you that appear as sources in AI answers, and whether those threads are accurate. A small number of threads usually does most of the work.
Response coverage
The share of complaint and question threads that received a reply from you, and how long it took. Coverage matters more than speed for threads that will be read for years.
Common Reddit monitoring mistakes
The failure modes we see most often, and the fix for each.
Astroturfing
Fake accounts, undisclosed employees and paid "organic" posts are the fastest way to lose a subreddit permanently, and the threads exposing it get cited too. Reply as the brand, disclose it, and let real customers do the recommending.
Ignoring old threads
Filtering to the last seven days hides the threads that rank on Google and feed AI answers. Sort your backlog by citation likelihood and search visibility, not by date.
Tracking only the exact brand name
Misspellings, abbreviations, product nicknames and competitor-comparison phrasing carry a large share of the real conversation. Build the term list from how people actually write, then prune false positives.
Alerting on everything
Real-time pings for every mention train the team to ignore them. Alert on complaints, high-visibility threads and factual errors; digest the rest.
Replying defensively or asking for deletions
A curt or legalistic reply becomes the most quoted comment in the thread. Acknowledge, fix what you can, point to a source, and leave the thread up.
Measuring volume alone
More mentions is not better if sentiment is falling or competitors are recommended more often. Pair volume with share of voice, recommendation rate and cited-thread count.

Reddit monitoring FAQs
What is Reddit monitoring?
Reddit monitoring is the continuous tracking of posts and comments across subreddits that mention your brand, products, competitors or category, so your team can read sentiment, respond where it helps, and catch problems early. A Reddit monitoring tool automates the collection, scores each mention for relevance and sentiment, and routes alerts to the right person.
Why does Reddit monitoring matter for AI search?
Because AI answer engines cite Reddit threads when they answer product and brand questions. Retrieval-based assistants such as Perplexity and ChatGPT with browsing fetch live threads, and training-based answers absorb them over time. Monitoring which threads about you are being cited tells you where an accurate reply or a better thread would change what AI says about your brand.
How can I monitor Reddit mentions for free?
Run our free Reddit audit at /tools/reddit-audit for an instant snapshot, or use the free Reddit mention checker for a quick read on current mentions. Manual searching on Reddit works for a single brand name but misses comments, misspellings and competitor threads, which is where most of the useful signal lives.
Which subreddits should I monitor?
Start with the communities where your category is discussed, not the largest subreddits. Add the adjacent ones — budget, regional, ingredient or use-case communities — and any subreddit where a competitor is regularly recommended. The subreddit recommender at /tools/which-subreddits builds this list from your product description.
Can Reddit monitoring track competitors?
Yes. Add competitor names and product names as tracked terms and you get their mention volume, sentiment and recommendation rate alongside yours. Comparison threads that name both of you are the most valuable, because they show the reasons buyers give for choosing one over the other.
How often should I check Reddit mentions?
Complaints and high-visibility threads should reach someone the same day, which is what alert rules are for. Everything else fits a daily digest and a weekly metrics review. Real-time notifications for every mention sound thorough but train teams to ignore them.
Should brands reply on Reddit?
Yes, when the reply adds something: a fix, a correction with a source, or an honest answer to a direct question. Reply from a clearly identified brand account, follow each subreddit's rules on brand participation, and never ask for a thread to be removed. The reply will be read for years, so write it for the tenth reader, not the first.
How is Reddit monitoring different from social listening?
Social listening tools treat Reddit as one feed among many and usually collect top-level posts. Reddit monitoring built for the platform collects comments, tracks by subreddit, weights old threads that still rank, and — in Asva AI's case — shows which threads are already cited by AI answer engines. The last part is the difference between counting mentions and knowing which ones matter.
Does Reddit monitoring include comments or only posts?
It should include both. The majority of brand discussion on Reddit happens in comment replies inside threads that are nominally about something else. A tool that only collects posts will under-report your mentions and miss most complaints and recommendations.
How does Asva AI compare with Brand24 for Reddit?
Brand24 is a general social listening tool with Reddit as one source. Asva AI is built around Reddit and AI answer engines: comment-level collection, subreddit mapping, sentiment scoring, and citation tracking that shows which threads appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers. The full comparison is at /reddit-vs-brand24.
