Answer engine citation tracking

Citation intelligence: see which sources AI engines cite about your brand

Citation intelligence is the practice of tracking which sources AI answer engines cite when they answer questions about your brand and your category. In 2026, buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot for a recommendation before they reach your site, and the sources those engines cite decide what each answer says about you.

Asva runs a fixed set of your buyers' prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode on a set schedule — weekly by default — stores each raw answer, extracts every cited URL, classifies the source, and records how often your domain appears against the competitors an engine quotes instead. This page explains what the product measures, how it captures it, who uses it, and where it sits in the rest of Asva.

What citation intelligence measures

Citation intelligence measures which sources an engine used, not where a page ranks.

A search ranking tells you where you sit on a results page; a citation tells you which source an engine actually reached for when it built its answer. Asva reports a handful of distinct measures, each defined precisely so a number always means one thing:

  • Citation — a single source URL an engine retrieved and used or linked to compose one answer. It is the atomic unit; everything else is an aggregate of citations.
  • Citation rate — the share of your tracked answers, per engine, that cite your domain at least once. A citation rate of 30% on Perplexity means your domain appeared in roughly one in three of the Perplexity answers to your prompt set.
  • Citation share — your domain's citations as a percentage of all citations in the tracked set, read against the competitor domains an engine cites for the same prompts. This is the "how much of the cited surface is ours" number.
  • Cited-domain leaderboard — the ranked list of domains an engine cites most for your prompts, with counts, so you see which sources the engine treats as the reference in your category.
  • Source type — the category of each cited domain: third-party media, high-trusted media, company-owned, user-generated (UGC), or marketplace. It tells you whether earning a citation means writing your own page or earning a place on someone else's.
  • Citation drift — the change in which sources are cited across repeated runs. A domain cited every week last month and absent this month is a signal worth investigating.

Across Asva's live 30-day tracking window (Asva AEO MCP, 30 days to 18 September 2026), the tracked answer set carried 12,849 citations spanning 2,269 distinct domains — the raw material these measures summarise.

A citation, a mention, and a ranking are three different things

A model can name your brand without citing you, cite you without naming you, or do neither while you rank first on Google.

A mention is the engine saying your name; a citation is the engine using or linking a source; a ranking is your position in classic search. The three move independently, so a brand can be named often and cited never, or cited as a source while a competitor is the one recommended by name. Asva keeps the numbers apart — citation rate for which sources get used, mention rate for which brands get named — because the gap between them is the work: closing it is how a cited source becomes the recommended vendor. Mention rate, average answer position and sentiment live in the brand visibility tracker; citation intelligence owns the source side of that pair.

How Asva captures citations across engines

Asva captures every cited source per engine on a schedule and keeps the raw answer behind each one.

Each engine retrieves and cites differently, so Asva runs your prompt set through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode separately rather than blending them into one score. The prompt set itself is not guesswork: it comes from prompt intelligence, the real, intent-classified questions buyers ask engines in your category, so the citations you track are the ones attached to answers a buyer would actually see.

1

Start from real buyer prompts

The tracked prompt set is built from the intent-classified questions buyers actually ask engines in your category, so every citation you read is attached to an answer a buyer would see.

2

Run each engine separately, on a schedule

Asva runs the set through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode one engine at a time, weekly by default, and tags the region each answer was captured in — India, the US and the United Kingdom in the default configuration.

3

Store the raw answer and extract every cited URL

For every answer Asva keeps the full response text, extracts each cited URL, and classifies the source as third-party media, company-owned, UGC, high-trusted media or marketplace.

4

Read the trend, not a screenshot

Because the run repeats on a set cadence, you read a trend over weeks instead of a single snapshot, and you can watch a citation appear or disappear after you change a page.

Keeping the raw answer matters for trust. A citation count you cannot open is a claim; a citation count where every entry links back to the exact answer, engine, region and timestamp it came from is evidence. That stored corpus is what lets you explain a result to a stakeholder rather than assert it.

Why the citation picture changes from engine to engine

No two engines cite the same sources for the same question, so a single blended citation score hides the truth.

The engines do not weight sources alike. In Asva's live 30-day window (Asva AEO MCP, 30 days to 18 September 2026), the 12,849 tracked citations split across engines as Perplexity 27.95%, ChatGPT 26.64%, Gemini 23.31%, Copilot 11.14% and Google AI Mode 10.94% — and the domains each engine favoured differed underneath those totals. A source that wins on Perplexity can be invisible on Gemini. That is why citation intelligence reports rate per engine first: an average across engines can look healthy while you are absent from the one your buyers actually use. Reading per engine also tells you where a fix will pay off — the engine where a rival is cited and you are not is a more specific, cheaper target than "improve our AI visibility" in the abstract.

What earns a citation

Answer-first passages, specific facts and off-site corroboration earn citations more reliably than keyword density.

Engines lift short, self-contained passages that answer a question directly, so the pages they cite tend to state a definition or a fact in one sentence a reader could quote. Asva's 16 September 2026 citation classification export — a separate corpus of 26,629 classified citations and 5,767 exact quoted spans, kept apart from the live tracking window above — found the median lifted span is 13 words, roughly one plain sentence rather than a paragraph, and that only 13.4% of quoted spans carry a number. Definitions get retrieved; statistics persuade the human who reads the answer.

Off-site sources matter as much as your own pages. In the live 30-day window (Asva AEO MCP, to 18 September 2026), third-party media supplied 51.86% of tracked citations and company-owned pages 40.29%, with user-generated sources a further 6.1% — and the single most-cited domain was reddit.com, at 439 citations, ahead of any vendor's own site. The lesson citation intelligence makes concrete: some categories are won on your own pages, and some are won by earning a place on the third-party lists and community threads the engines already trust. Format leverage points the same way — in the 16 September 2026 export, listicle and best-of pages accounted for 17.3% of citations and data studies 5.5%, both formats most brands under-produce. Citation intelligence shows which of your own passages already get cited so you can write more of them, and which off-site sources to go earn.

Who uses citation intelligence

Citation intelligence serves the analyst, the brand team, the agency and the exec, each reading it at a different altitude.

SEO / AEO analyst

The analyst reads citation rate per engine and the cited-domain leaderboard to decide what to fix next — which of their own pages to strengthen and which competing source to displace. The stored raw answers let them prove why a number moved.

Brand and content team

The content team uses the source-type mix and the quoted-span view to decide format: whether the next asset is an owned page, a pitch to a third-party list, or participation in a community thread the engines cite. They see which passages already earn citations and reuse that shape.

Agency operator

An agency runs citation intelligence per client brand, reports a defensible per-engine picture rather than a vanity score, and shows the client exactly which sources the engines trust in their category. The neutral, source-level read is easier to defend in a client review than a single index.

Executive or founder

The exec wants the one-line answer: are we becoming a cited source in our category, on the engines our buyers use, or not. Citation rate and citation share, tracked over time, give that without a dashboard tour.

Where citation intelligence fits the rest of Asva

Citation intelligence is one view inside Asva's answer-engine-optimization platform, not a standalone metric.

It answers which sources get used; the brand visibility tracker answers whether you are named and how your share of voice moves; AI search monitoring records how those answers change over time; prompt intelligence supplies the buyer prompts underneath all of it; and the AI traffic decoder tells you whether the answers that cite you actually sent sessions. Because reddit.com is the most-cited single domain in the live window, Reddit AI tracking covers the community-citation path specifically. Read together they trace the whole route from a buyer's prompt to the source an engine trusts to the visit that follows.

The same citation data is also available as an MCP server, which is the part no other tool in the category offers. The Asva AI MCP server exposes your live tracker — including the citation tools behind this page — as OAuth-authenticated tools any compatible assistant can call, so you can ask "which domains cite us most on Perplexity this month, and what type are they?" inside Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code and get the answer from your live workspace, not a training-data guess. Setup, the full tool reference and the connect steps for each client live in the MCP server docs. This is the Asva AI data MCP that reads your AI-visibility workspace — read-only except for the self-serve audit — and is a separate service from any commerce protocol.

How it differs from a rank tracker or social listening

Citation intelligence is neither a rank tracker nor a social-listening tool, though it is often mistaken for both.

A brand that ranks first on Google can go uncited by every engine, and citation intelligence is what surfaces that gap. It sits beside those tools rather than replacing them — search rank still matters for classic search, and social listening still matters for reputation — but the question "which sources does the AI use when it answers about us" is the one only citation intelligence answers.

Rank tracker

Records your position in a list of ten blue links. It cannot see inside an AI-generated answer, where there is no page two and the unit of visibility is the cited source, not the ranked URL.

Social listening

Counts mentions of your name across social platforms and news. It tells you people are talking, not which sources an engine trusts to compose an answer.

Backlink tracker

Counts static links between websites. Citations shift as engines and pages update, so they are read as a trend per engine rather than a fixed link count.

Citation intelligence

Captures the specific URLs each engine cited, per engine, on a repeatable schedule, and classifies them so you know whether to write a page, earn a placement, or join a thread.

Metrics glossary

Every metric on this page has one definition, so a number never means two things.

  • Citation — one source URL an engine retrieved and used or linked to build a single answer.
  • Citation rate — the share of your tracked answers, on one engine, that cite your domain at least once.
  • Citation share — your domain's citations as a percentage of all citations in the tracked set, read against the competitor set.
  • Cited-domain leaderboard — the ranked list of the domains an engine cites most for your prompt set, with counts.
  • Source type — the classification of a cited domain: third-party media, high-trusted media, company-owned, UGC, or marketplace.
  • Per-engine citation split — how the tracked citations distribute across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode.
  • Mention rate — the share of answers that name your brand; distinct from citation rate, and reported in the brand visibility tracker.
  • Quoted span — the exact stretch of text an engine lifted from a source; the median in Asva's 16 September 2026 export is 13 words.
  • Citation drift — the change in which sources are cited across repeated runs of the same prompt set.
  • Region — the market an answer was captured in; India, the US and the United Kingdom by default.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about how Asva tracks and reports AI citations.

What is citation intelligence?+

Citation intelligence is the tracking of which sources AI answer engines cite when they answer questions about your brand and category. It records the cited URL behind every tracked answer, separately from whether the answer names your brand, so you can see which sources the engines treat as the trusted reference.

What is the difference between a citation and a mention?+

A mention is an engine naming your brand in its answer; a citation is the engine using or linking a source to build that answer. A page can be cited without being named, and a brand can be named without being cited, so Asva reports the two as separate numbers rather than one visibility score.

Which AI engines does Asva track citations across?+

Asva tracks citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode, in India, the US and the United Kingdom. Each engine is run separately because engines retrieve and cite different sources for the same question.

How does Asva know which source an engine cited?+

Asva stores the full raw answer for every tracked prompt, extracts each cited URL from it, and classifies the source by type and region. Because the raw answer is kept, every citation count links back to the exact answer, engine, region and timestamp it came from.

How often does Asva check for new citations?+

Asva runs your prompt set on a set schedule, weekly by default, and stores each raw answer. Because the run repeats, you read citation trends over time rather than a single snapshot, and can tell when a page change added or lost a citation.

What kinds of sources tend to get cited?+

It varies by category, but across Asva's live 30-day window to 18 September 2026, third-party media supplied 51.86% of tracked citations and company-owned pages 40.29%, with the single most-cited domain being reddit.com. Some categories are won on your own pages and others by earning a place on third-party lists and community threads.

How is citation intelligence different from backlink or rank tracking?+

Backlink tracking counts static links between websites and rank tracking records your position in classic search results; citation intelligence records which sources an AI engine used inside a generated answer. Citations shift as engines and pages update, so they are read as a trend per engine rather than a fixed link count or ranking.

Can I query my citation data from my AI assistant?+

Yes. The Asva AI MCP server exposes your live citation and visibility data as tools any MCP-compatible assistant can call, so you can ask about your cited domains inside Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code. Setup and the full tool reference are on the MCP server docs page; hosted clients authenticate through an OAuth pop-up, with no token to paste.
