AI Citation
When an AI platform references or links to your content as a source in its response. Citations drive traffic and establish authority.
What is AI Citation?
An AI citation is a source link attached to an AI-generated answer. When ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot or Gemini retrieves pages before answering, it lists the pages it drew on, either as numbered footnotes, inline link cards or a sources panel. Each of those links is a citation, and a citation to a page you own means the engine fetched it, judged it relevant and used it to support part of the answer.
Citations are produced by the retrieval layer, not by the model's memory. That has two consequences. First, a page can only be cited if the engine's retrieval agent (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and their equivalents) can fetch it, which makes robots.txt and server-side rendering prerequisites. Second, the engine cites passages, so the part of the page that states the answer plainly is what earns the link, not the page as a whole.
A citation and a mention are different things. A brand can be named in an answer with no link (the model recalled it from training) or a brand's page can be cited to support a claim in which the brand is never named. Tracking both, per prompt and per engine, shows whether visibility is coming from the brand's own content or from what the engines learned elsewhere.
Why it matters for AI search
Citations are the most controllable form of AI visibility because they come from pages the brand publishes. They are also the only AI visibility that sends measurable traffic: a user who clicks a citation arrives as a referral from the engine. Analysing which pages get cited, for which prompts, on which engines, shows exactly which content is working and where a rewrite, a new page or a crawler-access fix would earn more.

Citation Rate
The percentage of AI responses that cite your content as a source. A key metric for measuring AEO success.
Citation Intelligence
The analysis of which specific sources and pages an AI model chooses to reference when answering a query.
Brand Mention
An instance where an AI platform explicitly names your brand in a response, whether as a recommendation, comparison, or reference.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
A technique that allows LLMs to pull in real-time information from external sources (like a website) before generating an answer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get cited by AI engines?+
Allow AI retrieval crawlers in robots.txt, serve the content in the initial HTML, open the page with a direct answer to a specific question, keep claims specific and current, and add relevant structured data. Then check which prompts already retrieve competitor pages and write the stronger version of those pages.
Do AI citations send traffic?+
Yes, when users click them. Referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com show up in analytics as referral sources. Click-through rates are lower than classic search results because the answer often resolves the question, so citations should be valued for authority as well as traffic.
