ChatGPT Search

OpenAI's feature allowing ChatGPT to search the web in real-time for current information, combining conversational AI with live search results.

What is ChatGPT Search?

ChatGPT search is the web-retrieval mode inside ChatGPT. When it is active, either because the user selects it or because the model decides the question needs current information, ChatGPT rewrites the request into search queries, retrieves pages, reads them and composes an answer with linked sources shown inline and in a sources panel. OpenAI launched it broadly in late 2024 after an earlier SearchGPT prototype, and it is available to free and paid users.

The retrieval layer is fed by OpenAI's own crawling and indexing. OAI-SearchBot crawls the web to build the search index, and ChatGPT-User fetches specific pages at the moment a user's request needs them. Both are separate from GPTBot, the training crawler, and are governed by their own robots.txt rules. A site that blocks OAI-SearchBot will not appear as a source in ChatGPT search even if it allows GPTBot, and vice versa.

ChatGPT search blends retrieval with the model's own knowledge, so a brand can be mentioned from training memory without any citation, or cited from a live page without being named in the answer text. It also shows shopping, map and news results for some queries. For GEO, it is the highest-volume answer engine, and its citation behaviour rewards pages that state a specific answer plainly and are retrievable without JavaScript.

Why it matters for AI search

ChatGPT is the most widely used AI assistant, and its search mode is where buyers ask comparison and recommendation questions with live sources attached. Appearing there requires allowing OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, serving content server-side and answering questions directly, and it is measured through mention and citation tracking against a stable prompt set. Because ChatGPT also draws on training memory, visibility there reflects both what the model learned and what it can retrieve today.

Frequently asked questions

Which crawlers does ChatGPT search use?+

OAI-SearchBot builds the search index and ChatGPT-User fetches pages on demand during a conversation. Both must be allowed in robots.txt for a site to be cited. GPTBot is the separate training crawler and does not affect search visibility.

Does ChatGPT search always show citations?+

When search is used, sources are shown as inline links and in a sources list. If ChatGPT answers from its own knowledge without searching, there are no citations, which is why the same prompt can produce cited and uncited answers on different runs.

How is ChatGPT search different from Perplexity?+

Both retrieve live pages and cite them, but ChatGPT leans more on the model's training knowledge and shows citations less prominently, while Perplexity retrieves for nearly every answer and foregrounds numbered sources. The two often cite different domains for the same prompt.
