Citation Intelligence

The analysis of which specific sources and pages an AI model chooses to reference when answering a query.

What is Citation Intelligence?

Citation intelligence is the practice of systematically collecting the sources that answer engines cite and analysing them for patterns. Every time ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Copilot answers a prompt, it attaches a set of URLs it retrieved. Run the same prompt set on a schedule, capture those URLs, and you have a dataset of what each engine trusts for each topic.

That dataset answers questions that classic SEO tools cannot. Which domains does Perplexity cite for "best CRM for small teams"? Is it review sites, Reddit threads, vendor pages or news? Which of your own pages ever get cited, and for which prompts? Which competitor pages are cited instead of yours? How does the citation mix differ between engines? Over time it also shows drift: a source that was cited consistently last month and has disappeared this month is a signal worth investigating.

Citation intelligence turns into an action list. If engines consistently cite third-party listicles for your category, earning a place on those lists matters more than another blog post. If a competitor's comparison page is cited and yours is not, the structure and specificity of that page is the model to study. If your own pages are never retrieved, the problem is usually crawler access, rendering or the absence of a direct answer near the top.

Why it matters for AI search

In AI search the citation is the unit of visibility. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being ranked anywhere in Google. Knowing which sources an engine reaches for tells you where to invest: your own pages, third-party sites you can earn placement on, or communities you should participate in. Without citation data, GEO work is guesswork; with it, teams can prioritise the specific pages and sources that actually influence the answers buyers see.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?+

A mention is the brand name appearing in the answer text. A citation is a linked source the engine says it used. You can be mentioned without being cited (the model recalled you from training) and cited without being named (your page supported a general claim). Both are tracked separately.

Which engines expose citations?+

Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini all show source links, though the format and prominence vary. Plain chat responses without web retrieval usually have no citations at all.
