Meta Description
HTML element describing page content. While less important for rankings, it helps AI understand content context.
What is Meta Description?
A meta description is a short summary of a page placed in the HTML head as a meta tag with name="description". Search engines have long used it as the default text under a result's title, though Google rewrites it frequently when it judges another passage more relevant to the query. Google has said it is not a ranking factor; its influence on classic search is through click-through rate.
For AI systems the tag is one of several summary signals a crawler sees before reading the body. Retrieval systems that index pages often store the title and description alongside the content, and some answer engines display the description in their source cards. A description that states plainly what question the page answers helps the engine match it to relevant prompts and helps users decide whether to click the citation.
The practical guidance is unchanged from good SEO practice: write one unique description per page, keep it to roughly 150 to 160 characters, lead with the specific subject and the answer or benefit, and make sure it agrees with the page's first paragraph. A description that promises something the page does not deliver, or that is duplicated across many pages, gives engines a weaker or misleading summary to work with.
Why it matters for AI search
The meta description is a small but free opportunity to state what a page is for in one sentence, in the same words a buyer would use when asking an assistant. It reinforces the page's topic for retrieval, shows up in some AI source cards, and keeps the page's summary consistent with its answer-first opening. It will not make an unretrievable page citable, but on a well-structured page it removes one more source of ambiguity.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI engines use meta descriptions?+
Some retrieval systems index the description alongside page content and some answer engines show it in citation previews, but there is no evidence it drives citation selection on its own. Treat it as a consistency and click-through signal, not a lever.
How long should a meta description be for AI search?+
The same as for classic search: roughly 150 to 160 characters, one unique description per page, stating the page's subject and answer directly. Longer descriptions are truncated in most displays and add nothing for retrieval.
