AI Overviews (SGE)

Google's search feature that uses AI to synthesize a direct answer at the top of the search results page, citing various web sources.

What is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary Google places above the traditional organic results for many queries. It began as the Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment in Search Labs and was rolled into the main results page under the AI Overviews name. The summary is written by a Gemini model that reads a set of retrieved pages and condenses them into a few paragraphs, bullet points or steps, with links to the pages it drew from shown alongside or inside the text.

AI Overviews does not appear on every query. It tends to trigger on informational and comparison questions where Google decides a synthesized answer is helpful, and it is far less common on navigational and many transactional searches. Google has also introduced AI Mode, a fully conversational search tab, which uses the same retrieval-and-synthesis approach across a whole conversation rather than a single query.

For site owners, the important mechanics are that AI Overviews draws on pages already in Google's index, favours content that answers the question plainly near the top of the page, and shows citations that can send traffic even when the page is not ranking first organically. Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt affects Gemini training use, not whether a page can appear in Search or AI Overviews.

Why it matters for AI search

AI Overviews sits above position one, so for the queries where it triggers it changes how much attention and traffic the organic results receive. Being cited inside the overview is the new top of the page. It also shapes brand perception: the summary states which products or approaches are recommended, and a brand missing from that summary is easy to overlook. Tracking whether and how a brand appears in AI Overviews, per query, is now part of visibility reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Is SGE the same as AI Overviews?+

Yes. SGE (Search Generative Experience) was the Search Labs experiment name. When Google launched the feature broadly in search results it renamed it AI Overviews. AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational search experience built on the same technology.

How do I get my page cited in an AI Overview?+

Be indexed and eligible for regular search, answer the question directly and early on the page, use clear headings and structured data, and make sure the page loads and renders without JavaScript. There is no opt-in; Google picks sources from its index.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?+

No. Google-Extended controls whether content is used for Gemini model training and grounding in some products. Appearance in Search, including AI Overviews, is governed by the normal Googlebot rules and the nosnippet / max-snippet directives.
