Mention Frequency
A metric tracking how often a brand is mentioned in AI responses relative to a total set of industry-relevant prompts.
What is Mention Frequency?
Mention frequency (sometimes called mention rate or visibility rate) is the share of prompts, out of a fixed and relevant set, for which an AI engine's answer names a brand. If a tracking set contains 200 prompts about project management software and a brand appears in 60 of the answers, its mention frequency is 30 percent for that engine and period. It is normally reported per engine, per topic cluster and over time.
The metric depends entirely on the prompt set, so the set has to be built carefully: realistic phrasings a buyer would use, spread across awareness, comparison and purchase intents, and stable enough between runs that changes reflect the engine rather than the questions. Because LLM output varies between runs, mature tracking repeats each prompt several times and averages the result rather than trusting a single response.
Mention frequency is usually paired with position (was the brand first or last in a list), sentiment (was the mention favourable) and citation (was a brand-owned page linked). A high mention frequency with negative sentiment or no citations tells a very different story from the same number with positive framing and owned-page citations.
Why it matters for AI search
Mention frequency is the closest thing AI search has to an impressions metric. It answers the first question any marketer asks, "do the engines even bring us up?", in a way that can be trended and compared against competitors. Movement in the number, up or down, is the earliest signal that content changes, PR placements or a model update have changed how the brand is represented, and it is the base rate from which AI share of voice is calculated.

Frequently asked questions
How many prompts do I need to track mention frequency?+
Enough to cover the intents and sub-topics that matter for the business, and stable enough to compare across runs. Small sets are noisy because model output varies; repeating prompts and averaging helps more than simply adding volume.
Is mention frequency the same as share of voice?+
No. Mention frequency measures how often a single brand appears. Share of voice compares that against competitors for the same prompt set, expressing the brand's portion of all brand mentions.
