How a D2C Maternity Brand Beat Amazon to #1 in AI Search Citations
House of Zelena went from #6 to #1 in AI citations in 3 months — overtaking Amazon, Meesho, and FirstCry across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
The Challenge
House of Zelena (HOZ) is a Bengaluru-based D2C maternity wear brand with Rs 3.12 Cr revenue in FY2024. With 55K Instagram followers and a Rs 7 Cr seed round, HOZ was building India's most recognised maternity fashion brand. But a new discovery channel was emerging — AI search — and HOZ was invisible in it.
When expectant mothers asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini for maternity wear recommendations, HOZ was not appearing. The brand ranked #6 in AI citations behind Amazon (270 citations), Meesho (222), WobblyWalk (189), TheMomStore, and FirstCry. ChatGPT cited HOZ in only 22.2% of maternity queries. 500K+ monthly maternity AI queries in India were going to competitors.

The ASVA Solution
Asva AI applied a 3-phase AEO methodology over 9 months: Phase 1 mapped 135 maternity prompts across 4 topic clusters and benchmarked 8 competitors. Phase 2 built AI-readable category pages with FAQ, Product, and HowTo schema, reinforced proprietary brand entities (BellyLove, Zipless, Peek-a-Boo Airflow), and added UTM tagging for AI traffic attribution. Phase 3 ran weekly citation tracking across 3,257 AI responses, PR syndication to Tribune India, ANI, and Business Standard, and monthly SOV monitoring.
"We were spending lakhs on marketplace ads while AI search was sending customers to our competitors for free. ASVA showed us a channel nobody in Indian D2C was even thinking about. In 3 months we went from invisible to the most-cited maternity brand — ahead of Amazon."

Key Lessons
Specialisation beats scale in AI search — Amazon went from #1 to near-zero while a focused D2C brand took #1
AEO compounds like SEO but faster — quarterly model retraining bakes in citation signals cumulatively
Active management is non-negotiable — when the implementation lead exited, Gemini citations dropped 26 points in one month
Proprietary product terms become citation anchors — BellyLove and Zipless appeared verbatim in AI responses
Press coverage is fuel for AI citation — features in Tribune and ANI created third-party trust signals AI engines cite
